CLONING A HARD DRIVE

WARNING: I'm using Windows 98SE and Norton Ghost 2003 to clone from a basic hard drive to a  basic hard drive. This is called basic disk to disk cloning. The Ghost program can do much more than the simple cloning that I need. To learn more about its many uses, read the Ghost instruction manual.

"To clone a basic disk "Basic disk" is the term used in Windows 2000 and Windows XP to indicate that the disk is not a dynamic disk. That is, a basic disk does not include simple, mirrored, spanned, striped, or RAID-5 volumes. To clone a basic disk, run Ghost as usual."

The following quotations are from Ghost help files on the WWW.

Here are two addresses for more information on cloning with Norton Ghost 2003. If you have a different version of  Ghost, you can find information at www.symantec.com/support. You can copy and paste the following addresses into your Web Browser's address line:
It's also important to mention that a hard drive cloned on a specific computer should be used on the same computer or on one containing identical hardware; if not, your hardware drivers will be incorrect and they will have to be changed. This is covered in the Ghost instruction manual which is included within your Ghost program.

"How to perform a disk-to-disk clone Situation: You want to use Ghost to copy one disk to another disk on the same computer. You plan to use the second drive in one of the following ways: - As the primary drive on the computer. - As the primary drive on a different computer. - As a backup of the first drive. You plan to remove the second drive from the computer and keep it in storage. Solution: Ghost refers to this function as a Disk to Disk clone. The disk you copy from is called the source disk, and the disk you copy to is called the destination disk or target disk. The entire contents of the source disk, including partitions and unpartitioned space, overwrite the entire contents of the destination disk. CAUTION: Do not start the computer after cloning until the instructions say to do so. Booting a computer from the hard drive when the computer has two hard drives with Primary Active partitions, can damage program installations and trigger configuration changes on both source and destination that you might not be able to reverse without restoring backups."
I have found it simple to clone disk to disk from within Windows. The simple instructions are located in your Ghost Instruction Manual. Ghost 2003 lists the 10 step information in Chapter 3, pages 39 and 40.

Before you attempt cloning, read my warning notice located on page C1, paragraph 1.

(Please note that I'm now dual booting Win98SE and Ubuntu Linux (ext 3 file system) on this computer. All the text below still applies - they both clone in the same operation).
