Here is a typical economy Mobo that has on-board video, audio and LAN (all integrated into the board).
Typical Power Supply. They are all-enclosed - safe, but don't force it open. Inside, it is unsafe.
Inside a Hard Drive (top removed).
Bottom of this Hard Drive. Bottoms aren't covered.
The hard drive may contain several stacked disks which are recorded on top and bottom sides of each disk. This one has three disks (6 sides, therefore 6 heads). The heads float just above the surface on a cushion of air while the disks spin at up to 7200RPM or more. Any disturbance of the drive may cause damage, especially when it is running.
The recording is magnetic on a rigid disk = Hard Drive. On a Floppy Disk the recording is magnetic on a flexible disk = Floppy Drive.
Some hard drive bottoms don't have a cover so keep fingers and tools away from the Integrated Circuits. Handle the drive by the sides.

Hard Drives and Floppy Drives use magnetic write/read. CD's use optical lasers; a totally different method.

On a typical modern motherboard you will have 3 drive connectors. The shortest one, a 34 pin connector is for your floppy drive - if you have one. The two 40 pin connectors are for a primary and a secondary channel. Your hard drive(s) cable connects to the primary (usually identified by color or number stamped on the motherboard). Your CD/DVD drives normally connect to the second connector.
